Uricacidisthemostprevalentantioxidantinthebloodandminimizesthesystemicphysiologicalstressoffree-rADIcaloxygenspeciesonthebodypreventingastateknownasOxidativeStress.ThecumulativedamagecausedbyOxidativeStresshasbeenlinkedtoawiderangeofhealthproblemsincludingcancer,cardiovasculardiseaseandagerelatedneurodegenerativediseasesamongothers.Therefore,theantioxidantpropertiesofuricacidarethoughttoprovideaprotectiveroleagainsttheseconditions.

Whenuricacidconcentrationsareelevatedinaconditionknownashyperuricemia,significantharmfulhealtheffectsresult.Blooduricacidlevelsabove7mg/dlleadstotheformationofmonosodiumurate(MSU)crystals.Aftersustainedhyperuricemia,theseMSUcrystalsdepositintendonsandjointstocauseseverediseasesincludinggout,kidneystonesandseveralformsofkidneydisease.Goutisthemostprevalentinflammatoryarthritisworldwideandfrequentmonitoringofuricacidlevelsiscriticalfordiseasemanagement.Inthecaseofkidneystones,approximately5-10%ofthe3.3millionAmericansseekingmedicalcareforkidneystonesareduetoelevateduricacid.Highblooduricacidlevelsarealsoassociatedwithawidevarietyofdiseasesincludinghypertension,increasedcardiovascularmortality,obesityandmetabolicsyndrome.
