Interleukin-6(IL-6)isoneofafamilyofBIOLOGicallyactivesmallproteinmoleculesknownascytokines. Itisreleasedbyavarietyoftissues,includingactivatedleukocytes,ADIpocytes,andendothelialcells,anditisinvolvedinmanyprocessesinthebody. IL-6playsanimportantroleinstimulatingtheimmuneresponsetoinfectionortraumabyinducingtheproductionofacute-phaseproteinssuchasCRPandbyfeverinduction. (1,2,3) Inadditiontoitspro-inflammatoryrole,IL-6alsohasanti-inflammatoryproperties.(4) MessengerRNAforIL-6hasbeenfoundintissuesofhealthyhumanlABIalsalivaryglands,andtheexpressionlevelsofthemRNAswereeitherup-ordown-regulatedbyadjacentfocalinfiltratinglymphoidcells.Theepithelialcellsinthesalivaryglandsareactiveparticipantsintheautoimmune-mediatedprocessofSjögren’ssyndrome,andsalivarylevelsofIL-6areincreasedinthatdisease.(5,6) SalivaryIL-6levelsarealsoincreasedinperiodontaldisease.(7)
ResearchershavefoundrelationshipsbetweensalivaryIL-6andsleepdysfunction,psychosocialfactors,andstress.(8,9,10) AstudywithmicehasshownthatnormalparotidacinarcellssynthesizeIL-6andstoreitinsecretorygranules. TheIL-6isreleasedfromthegranulesfollowingα-andβ-adrenergicstimulation.(11)
