Interleukin-1β(IL-1β)isoneofafamilyofBIOLOGicallyactivesmallproteinmoleculesknownascytokines. Cytokinesareproducedbyanumberofdifferentcelltypes,including macrophages,monocytes,fibroblasts,and dendriticcells.(1,2,3) IL-1βisanexampleofapro-inflammatorycytokine,sinceitisinvolvedinthebody’sinflammatoryresponsetoacuteorchronicinfections,ortoconditionsthatcauseapersistentlow-gradeinflammatorystate,suchasobesity.(4,5) IL-1βisthereforefrequentlyusedasabio-markerofinflammation.(6,7)AstudywithnormalmouseparotidacinarcellshasshownthattheysynthesizeIL-1βandstoreitinsecretorygranules.TheIL-1βisreleasedfromthegranulesfollowingα-andβ-adrenergicstimulation.(8)RelationshipsbetweenIL-1βlevelsinbloodandsalivaarenotfullyunderstood.
